Giovanni Putti
27 x 52 x 24 cm
This unpublished terracotta Lamentation features the Virgin, Christ, and Mary Magdalene in a composition that blends Neoclassical style with Baroque echoes. The Virgin’s prayerful gesture and Magdalene’s upward gaze evoke emotional depth, while their attire reflects late eighteenth-century fashion. The work recalls Angelo Gabriello Piò’s Pietà and its replicas, with Magdalene replacing Saint Francis in a pose derived from Piò’s workshop.
Attributed to Giovanni Putti (1771–1847), the piece shares stylistic traits with his documented sculptures, including tomb figures in Bologna’s Certosa cemetery and Nativity terracottas. Though its function remains uncertain, it may have served as a devotional object or a preparatory model. Its intimate reinterpretation of Baroque motifs suggests it might have been created by Putti for personal reflection, underscoring his enduring connection to Piò’s legacy and the emotional expressiveness of eighteenth-century sculpture.
